Organic Coffee
Organic coffee is noted for the way it is grown. These growing methods are meant to have a low impact on the environment. Organic growth systems maintain soil fertility, and reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers.
In order for coffee to be sold as organic, certification is required, verifying that the coffee has been produced in accordance with U.S. standards for organic production. Requirements to meet this certification include farming without prohibited substances such as synthetic pesticides. Growers must also show that they have a sustainable crop rotation plan that will prevent erosion and maintain a healthy soil.
In order to receive the USDA organic seal, a coffee product must contain at least 95% organic ingredients as certified by an agency accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There are also labels which say “100 percent organic.”
